Sensat and Severn Trent Shortlisted for Water Industry Award: Revolutionising CSO Planning with Digital Innovation

May 2, 2025

London, UK – May 1, 2025: Sensat, a pioneer in infrastructure visualisation software, is thrilled to announce its shortlisting alongside Severn Trent for the prestigious Water Industry Awards. Their groundbreaking collaboration, titled "70% time saving in CSO planning workflows using digital visualisation," has been recognised in the competitive category celebrating advancements in the water sector.

Faced with the significant challenge of reducing Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) spills, Severn Trent embarked on an ambitious £450m programme. With a target of building hundreds of storm tanks within a tight 90-day timeframe and thousands of potential locations to assess, the sheer volume of site data presented a critical hurdle.

Sensat and Severn Trent partnered to reimagine the traditional planning workflow. By leveraging Sensat's cutting-edge platform to create accurate digital replicas of potential CSO locations overlaid with critical planning data, Severn Trent's teams could conduct initial site assessments and design reviews virtually from their desktops. This innovative approach eliminated the delays and logistical complexities associated with in-person site visits and information silos.

The collaboration achieved remarkable results, including a 70% reduction in time spent on site assessments, with one instance seeing 93 initial site assessments completed in a single day. This efficiency translated to significant cost savings, estimated at £736,000 based on the reduced need for physical surveys.

Harry Atkinson, Sensat Co-founder, commented on the nomination: "This shortlisting alongside Severn Trent underscores the transformative power of digital visualisation in tackling critical challenges within the water industry. By providing a single source of truth and enabling seamless collaboration, our platform has demonstrably accelerated Severn Trent's CSO reduction programme, delivering tangible time and cost savings. We believe this approach holds immense potential for the entire water sector as it strives for greater efficiency and environmental responsibility."

The Water Industry Awards celebrate outstanding achievement and innovation within the UK water sector. The nomination highlights the potential for Sensat's technology to drive significant efficiencies, improve data accuracy, and foster collaboration across complex infrastructure projects within the water industry and beyond.

The winners of the Water Industry Awards will be announced at a ceremony in June.
